Learn to Surf – CAPE TOWN SURF ADVENTURE

surfing

“My face above the water,
my feet can’t touch the ground,
and it feels like
I can see the sands on the horizon
everytime you are not around.

I’m slowly drifting away
wave after wave,
I’m slowly drifting
and it feels like I’m drowning,
pulling against the stream.”

Raindrops, clear, warm, keep falling on my head as we arrive in Strand. The sand wet and sticky to my feet, the sky gray like the walls of the houses behind me.

I hold my breath as i plunge into the ocean. silence. The surrounding world moves into another perspective, gets small, unimportant. There is just water, nature, my breath. The sun shining out between the clouds, grasping for attention.

I take my first wave.

Freedom.

Flying over the ocean, the saltwater burning on my skin, raindrops falling down.

The sun, powerful, last raindrops sparkling in the air until the clouds clear the sky.

Visit Cape Town – LIFE IN OBZ

Observatory

“Visit Cape Town and history is never far from your grasp. It lingers in the air, a scent on the breezy, an explanation of circumstance that shaped the Rainbow People. Stroll around the old downtown and it’s impossible not to be affected by the trials and tribulations of the struggle. But, in many ways, it is the sense of triumph in the face of such adversity that makes the experience all the more poignant.”
― Tahir Shah, Travels With Myself

I am walking around Obz, a suburb of Cape Town, cold wind in my hair, the sun just behind Table Mountain. Noises, out of a little store on my left as I am walking up Lower Main Road. Smoke on the right side of the street. A taste of meat and spices is hanging in the air. Some homeless person sitting on a filthy mattress next to a gay bar as the sky turns red.

American girls with incredibly short shorts walking by, making the guy around the corner gazing.

A Mercedes is driving by, loud beats surrounding me. Bass and rhythms and exhaust noise forming a new track, the scent of the Rainbow Nation.

Every journey has its beginning

As I’m looking throgh the window clouds and a foggy sky embrace me with a contemptuous smile.

I got my BA in visual communications this summer. After hundreds candidacies, I thought about an other plan to acquire experience in my field of work, called design and illustration.

After a lot of online research, I found an agency called http://www.studentsgoabroad.com/. They immediately answered to my questions and suggested Cape Town as my destination of choice. First I wasn’t to sure about this suggestion, because I didn’t know anything about this city and the culture. But as I informed myself, i was suddenly inspired about everything. The sea, the beaches, surfing, table mountain, penguins, seals, whales, baboons, the whole nature surrounding the city has convinced me to be open for something absolute new.

A year ago I was in Sápmi, Lapland, the Land of ice and snow, at minus 30 degrees I enjoyed my trip to the most northern cities and towns of Sweden above the polar circle.

This year I will be in the most southern city of Africa.

What a life, it seems that I like contrasts!

I’ve heard a lot about the delinquency in cape town, but that shouldn’t scare me away, I’ve also heard, that If you follow some rules, that shouldn’t be a problem. I will write more about this, when i’ve experienced it firsthand.

Now I’m just extremely excited about my trip and I’m looking forward that everything will work out.

Please join me in my journey to cape town and leave some comments.
